Google’s John Mueller: WordPress Not Inherently Much Better For SEO

Posted by

In response to a thread on Reddit, Google Browse Supporter John Mueller says there’s no fundamental SEO advantage to using WordPress compared to coding a website yourself.

A thread in the r/SEO forum asks a familiar question lots of professionals run into in their professions.

Is WordPress better for SEO than coding your own website?

Other variations of that concern include, “is WordPress much better for SEO than Wix,” or, “is WordPress much better for SEO than [insert CMS here]”

No matter how you ask it, the answer is always the same.

WordPress isn’t naturally better for SEO than any other alternative. It is among many ways to develop a website that ranks in Google.

Mueller On WordPress For SEO

In reaction to whether utilizing WordPress is better for SEO than coding your own website, Mueller states:

“Not for SEO, but you can focus more on the material if you do not spend all your time creating a brand-new CMS for yourself. (some people choose making a CMS, so YMMV).”

As Mueller states, the most considerable advantage WordPress offers is the ease of usage compared to by hand composing code.

Nevertheless, that’s just advantageous to the site owner. It makes no distinction to Google if a website is constructed with WordPress.

This concern comes up frequently and deserves reviewing due to the misinformation distributing around WordPress and SEO.

For example, take the second-most upvoted remark in the Reddit thread directly below Mueller’s.

A specific claims, “Google understands WordPress well,” as though Googlebot can crawl WordPress websites more effectively than other CMSs.

That’s incorrect, though the misconception of WordPress being better for SEO continues to continue.
